Woodwards Gripe Water

Woodward's Gripe Water was formulated by William Woodward, a successful pharmacist in Nottingham, England, in 1851. It is the first remedy of it's kind to take on the name Gripe Water.

The inspiration for Woodward's Gripe Water came from the recipe a group of Nottingham doctors were using at the time to treat fen fever (malaria). The doctors discovered the formula not only treated the fen fever, it also was an effective soother of crying babies and provided relief from gastrointestinal troubles in infants. It isn't clear where the name Gripe Water originated, but it is thought that Woodward was influenced by the 19th century name for gastroenteritis, or "watery gripes."

Woodward registered the words "gripe water" as a trademark in 1876 and sold to the public by the ounce and to doctors and hospitals by the gallon. Wives of British servicement endorsed the product and took it with them to the far corners of the British Empire.

Woodward's Gripe Water has spawned many imitators, but none have proven to be as popular in Europe. It is true, the original formula for Woodward's contained 3.6% alcohol. In 1992, following public pressure, the alcohol was removed, as well as the sucrose. The active ingredients in Woodward's today are Terpeneless Dill Seed Oil and Sodium Bicarbonate. It is still alcohol free and sugar free.

Marketing literature indicates the Dill Seed Oil warms and relaxes your baby's tummy which breaks down the trapped air bubbles. The Sodium Bicarbonate neutralizes acid in your baby's tummy. It is not recommended for infants under 1 month of age.

Parents who have used Woodward's Gripe Water sing it's praises insisting every parent should keep a bottle in their cupboard. Some even give it as a baby shower gift.

Candid Clotrimazole Mouth Paint

Candid Mouth Paint 15ml

What is clotrimazole?

Clotrimazole is an antifungal medication. It is like an antibiotic but is used to treat yeast (fungal) infections.
Oral clotrimazole is used to treat and prevent yeast infections of the mouth and throat.
Clotrimazole may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about clotrimazole?

Take all of the clotrimazole that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may begin to improve before the infection is completely treated.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking clotrimazole?

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have liver disease. You may not be able to take clotrimazole, or you may need a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment.
Clotrimazole is not absorbed through your stomach. It will not treat fungal infections in any part of your body other than your mouth and throat. Talk to your doctor if you have another type of fungal infection such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, or a vaginal yeast infection.
Oral clotrimazole is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether clotrimazole will harm an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether clotrimazole will harm a nursing baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. The safety and effectiveness of clotrimazole have not been established for children younger than 3 years of age.

Zam-Buk Medicated Ointment

Zam Buk is an ointment that treats all kinds of ailments such as minor wounds, burns, scalds, itchy and chapped hands, insect bites and muscular aches and pains.

HISTORY

The origins of Zam Buk can be traced back to 1903. It first appeared on Rugby and Football fields in Australia and New Zealand. When a player would get injured first aid officers would race across the field to tend the injured player, they would quickly apply the zam buk to the injured area. Zam Buk acted as an antiseptic thus cleansing the wound and eliminating the chances of the wound becoming infected. Before antibiotics if a player would cut or graze his knee it could become infected to such an extent that the player could even die.

Although it is to begin with a South African product, there is a town in South Africa called Zambuk, the product made its journey from Australia to Great Britain when a Boer War veteran took the balm home. He referred to the balm as a secret ointment that could relieve or cure all sorts of ailments. Soon St Johns ambulance men began carrying zam buk in their kit bags to treat players on the fields also. With its growing popularity and effectivness zam buk became widely available on chemist shelves in countries such as Canada, New Zealand, England and Australia.

This was a product that had become recognised for succesfully killing germs that had entered the skin. In time people realised that it was also great for aches and sprains a small amount of this rubbed into the skin could work wonders.

Personal use

Zam Buk is widely used all over the world. People use this, as well as myself, for muscle soreness, sprains, small grazes, cuts etc. I use it on my kids also, they are always bumping themselves and coming out in bruises, I just apply a little bit of zam buk onto the area and the bruising goes down as well as giving the kids a soothing effect on the skin. I sometimes also use it as a lip balm if my lips are really dry or sore. Applying it to the forehead when I have a headache also seems to help.

Zam Buk has a distinct fragrance of eucalyptus and camphor but I would not say it was overpowering in any way. It is quite a refreshing fragrance. It comes in small tins, like in the pic provided, of 7g, 16g and 60g. Includes oils of thyme and sassafras.

Made purely of vegetable ingredients and can be used on sensitive skins also. It is a transparent ointment and is non greasy or sticky. If you cut yourself and apply a bit of this then you would not need the use of plasters.

You can get zam buk from any African grocery shop and it is easily available by mail order over the internet. You can buy in single tubs or bulk. Prices range from £3.00 to £12.00 for the larger tubs.

Give Zam Buk a try it is truly a miracle product, I know my life is better for using it.

Bosisto's Parrot Brand

Bosisto's History

Joseph Bosisto
The founder, Joseph Bosisto (1824-1898) was a renowned pharmacist with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for the healing arts.  Born in Leeds, England in his early 20’s he studied medicine and obtained certificates from the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain where he was eventually made an honorary member. In 1851, Bosisto moved to Victoria in search of gold but in actual fact he spent more time studying local flora in the Forest Creek goldfields than actually digging for gold. He established a successful pharmacy and became known in Victoria as “Doctor Bosisto.”  After striking up a friendship with Ferdinand Mueller, the Government Botanist in Victoria “Bosisto” would eventually become a household name.
Already keenly interested in the eucalyptus plant and its multi-faceted uses, Joseph Bosisto with the encouragement of Ferdinand Mueller began to explore eucalyptus oil on a commercial basis. With his far-reaching vision of the uses of this plant,  Bosisto set up a small eucalyptus oil distillation plant near Dandenong Creek, Victoria in 1852 making him the first person to produce eucalyptus oil commercially. Bosisto went on to build more distilleries successfully distilling eucalyptus oil that was used in a wide range of medicinal products.
With its varied uses in different medicinal products, Bosisto quickly became a household name. His most famous trademark, the parrot sitting on the eucalyptus branch, inside the yellow circle is well-known and a familiar sight to every health-conscious person. By 1865, his products were known in Britain and later in Europe, India, South Africa, and the U.S. in 1877
